SAT Probability and Conditional Probability

Probability and conditional probability is one of the seven official testing points in the Problem-Solving and Data Analysis domain on the digital SAT, a domain that accounts for 5–7 of the 44 math questions. Most of these questions hand you a two-way table and ask for the chance of one outcome, sometimes restricted to a specific row or column. The math is division. The points are won or lost on picking the right denominator.
What does this skill actually test?
Whether you can turn a group of counts into a fraction, and whether you know which group the question is actually asking about.
Probability is one number: the outcomes you want, divided by the total outcomes possible. It always lands between 0 and 1, and the SAT will take it as a fraction, a decimal, or a percent. That's the entire formula. No permutations, no combinations, no factorials — the official testing point is "probability and conditional probability," and that's the whole scope.
So why do people miss these? The numerator is usually obvious. The denominator isn't.
How do you read a two-way table?
A two-way table sorts the same group by two categories at once. Rows are one category, columns are the other, and the edges hold the totals.
Say a table sorts 200 students by grade level (rows) and whether they take the bus (columns). Every cell counts students who are both things at once — 45 tenth graders who take the bus. The right-hand column gives each row's total, the bottom row gives each column's total, and the bottom-right corner is everyone: 200.
Those margins are the denominators the question will choose between. Spot them before you read the question.
What makes conditional probability different?
Conditional probability is the probability of something given that something else is already true. The word "given" is the signal, and it changes one thing: your denominator shrinks.
Regular probability uses the whole group. Conditional probability throws out everyone who doesn't meet the condition and uses only what's left.
Back to the 200 students. "What is the probability a randomly selected student is a tenth grader who takes the bus?" — that's 45 out of 200, the whole table. But "given that a student is a tenth grader, what is the probability they take the bus?" — now only tenth graders exist. If there are 60 tenth graders, the answer is 45 out of 60. Same numerator. Completely different answer.
Watch for the phrasings that mean the same thing as "given":
- "Given that the student is a tenth grader…"
- "Of the students who take the bus…"
- "Among tenth graders…"
- "If a student is selected from those who…"
All four say: use the subgroup total, not 200.
How the SAT asks these
A few shapes that come up:
- Plain probability from a table. One cell over the grand total. Read the corner for the denominator.
- Conditional probability. Find the condition, locate that row or column total, use it as the denominator.
- Probability of a group, not a cell. "The probability a student is in ninth or tenth grade" — add the row totals first, then divide.
- Work backwards. The question gives you a probability and a total and asks for a missing count. Set up the fraction and solve for the blank.

Practice routine
Work a set of 10–12 two-way table questions, mixing plain and conditional. After each one:
- Circle the condition in the question before you touch a number, because the condition is what sets the denominator and it's the single thing most missed answers get wrong
- Say your denominator out loud as a group — "out of all 200 students" or "out of just the 60 tenth graders" — so a mismatch is audible before you divide
- Check that your answer is between 0 and 1, and that a conditional answer is never larger than its own subgroup total
